UPEGA COURSE

A beautiful way to finish the year — another Upega course completed! We’re so proud of the amazing mamas who took part. Their gratitude, commitment, and willingness to learn has been inspiring. They’re already putting their new skills and knowledge into practice at home, strengthening their confidence and supporting their families with care and resilience.

JULY 2026

OFANIA HIGHLIGHTS

Kupega o Moana held its second Ofania symposium on Thursday 3 July — ‘Prioritising Pacific Babies’ — a powerful and well-received gathering centred on the wellbeing of our youngest and most vulnerable.

We were honoured to welcome Chief Children’s Commissioner Dr Claire Achmad as our keynote speaker. She spoke passionately about the mahi of Mana Mokopuna and her deep commitment to uplifting the voices and futures of Pacific children.

We also had the privilege of hearing from:

  • Millie Tapusoa, Programme Lead for Pasifika Shining Lights, our primary mental health support for parents and children 0–5 with mild to moderate mental health and/or addiction needs, and her son Jayden, who shared his experience growing up with autism and how Millie equipped him with tools for life.

  • Vesi Leilua-Toilolo, who challenged us to consider how we can truly prioritise Pacific babies and highlighted the stark inequities our communities face.

Each speaker brought passion, lived experience, skill, and conviction — issuing a strong call to action: let’s work together for the benefit of our tamariki.

Fa‘afetai tele lava to all who attended, supported, and created space for these important conversations. Together, we continue to champion the future of Pacific children.

A huge thanks to Le Va for their support in making this event happen.

We provide primary mental health support to becoming Pasifika parents and infants and children from 0-5 years with mild to moderate mental health and / or addiction concerns.

Formely known as Anofale, Childbirth Education & Support Services provides essential antenatal and postnatal care, ensuring mums felt empowered, nurtured, and well-prepared for motherhood through culturally responsive support.

We run parenting courses, usually each semester, where Pasifika parents gain skills to effectively raise children in New Zealand.

Programmes offered

Roots is men’s support service, providing a culturally safe and respectful space where tāne talanoa, enjoy sports and encourage each-other.

The Pasifika Resilience programme provides long-term healing and recovery support for whānau impacted by violence, helping to break the cycles of harm and build a safer, healthier future for generations.

INATI is a Tokelauan tradition of communal sharing.

Bringing this tradition to Kupega has been incredible, creating a space where our Pasifika community can come together to share, learn, and take something home—whether it's knowledge, practical parenting support, guidance on navigating systems in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This is our home visiting service. The purpose is to nurture mothers emotional health and wellbeing and supporting aiga during the vital early stages of child's life. This early intervention provides a positive experience and alleviates undue pressure and stress with this whānau led approach.

Our workshops help parents understand the baby brain development, facilitated by Brainwave facilitator and Educational Psychologist, Latu Toomaga.
